What do You believe in?
How much are the memories of your youth worth to you?
What would you give to relive the best days of your life?
What makes life special to you?
What do you look forward to when you wake up day after day?
There are 2 people in VS who couldn't be more different:
One is a Maths teacher who's a fantastic runner; the other is a pe teacher who sucks at running.
One used to work as a life-guard at Sentosa; the other used to hang around China-town late at night.
One spends his entire day in school; the other spends his entire night in the hostel
But they shared a common belief that they could do something more for those they taught.
They shared a common purpose in believing that they could make a difference.
They left school each day, each going their own way, yet believing that tomorrow would be a better day for all of us.
There are 2 people in VS who couldn't be more different and yet ended up doing the same thing.
There are 2 people in VS who couldn't be more different and yet ended up believing in the same things.
They believe that it is possible to change coal into diamonds.
They believe that it is possible to turn water into wine.
They believe that we can all be something more.
They believe.......... in YOU

Holiday Homework
I know that this post is probably going to sound a bit flat after Mr Siow's exhortation to you guys, but do remember that you have some holiday homework for Combined Humanities.
For both SS and History, please make sure you attempt the SEQs that you did not do for the exam. You might also want to attempt the question that you did and try to improve that as well. I will be more than happy to mark it and return it to you with comments.
Remember what I told you guys when I returned your papers to you, the preparation for 'O' Levels do not start next year, it starts now. Please make sure that you are up to speed on your Sec 3 content, because Sec 4 is going to be a year of non stop year of examinations and tests to prepare you for the 'O's, so the more groundwork you do now the less you have to worry about next year.
I've seen many of you improve tremendously over the year and I'm sure the big improvement into distinction territory isn't far away now.
I will be on course from 3 to 20 Nov and I will be back in school from 20 Nov onwards. Do e-mail me if you need any help.
Have a good break.
Best Wishes,
Mr Tan

Fish Story
The Japanese have always loved fresh fish. But the waters close to Japan have not held many fish for decades. So to feed the Japanese population, fishing boats got bigger and went farther than ever. The farther the fishermen went, the longer it took to bring in the fish. If the return trip took more than a few days, the fish were not fresh. The Japanese did not like the taste.
To solve this problem, fishing companies installed freezers on their boats. They would catch the fish and freeze them at sea. Freezers allowed the boats to go farther and stay longer. However, the Japanese could taste the difference between fresh and frozen and they did not like frozen fish.
The frozen fish brought a lower price. So fishing companies installed fish tanks. They would catch the fish and stuff them in the tanks, fin to fin. After a little thrashing around, the fish stopped moving. They were tired and dull, but alive. Unfortunately, the Japanese could still taste the difference. Because the fish did not move for days, they lost their fresh-fish taste. The Japanese preferred the lively taste of fresh fish, not sluggish fish.
So how did Japanese fishing companies solve this problem? How do they get fresh-tasting fish to Japan? If you were consulting the fish industry, what would you recommend?
To keep the fish tasting fresh, the Japanese fishing companies still put the fish in the tanks. But now they add a small shark to each tank.
The shark eats a few fish, but most of the fish arrive in a very lively state. The fish are challenged.
Have you realized that some of us are also living in a pond but most of the time tired & dull, so we need a Shark in our life to keep us awake and moving? Basically in our lives, Sharks are new challenges to keep us active and taste better!
The more intelligent, persistent and competent you are, the more you enjoy a challenge.
If your challenges are of the correct sizes, and if you are steadily conquering those challenges, you are the Conqueror.
You think of your challenges and get energized.
You are excited to try new solutions, and continue trying till you succeed!
You have loads of fun,
You are alive!
Study really hard for the next 2 weeks and you guys can play for all you want! (:
Remember, it's never too late to start!
You only live life once, so give it your best-est shot!
All of us can do well if we want to, can't we? :D
This period, is our Final Sprint of the year..!

Here are some additional resources for MWH. These resources provide additional information for you, particularly those of you who are concerned about a lack of information.
Please remember that this information is meant to help you write your SEQs and give you contextual knowledge and it is NOT a substitute for lesson content and textbook content. In addition, you should still remember the fundamentals such as writing links, making a judgment, and the topics covered in class and in the text.

8th National Schools Sports Quiz
Today, the Serious PE class of 3B took part in the 8th National Schools Sports Quiz organised by Hwa Chong Institution.
Last year's team managed to get into the Top 3 despite having almost no preparation. So this year's team being comprised of the Serious PE fellas offering GCE PE for O-Levels surely can do better, right? Well, other schools offering GCE PE were also taking part and we knew we would face tough competition.
The qualifying round would consist of 40 MCQ. The Top 4 individuals and Top 4 teams would proceed to the finals.
So first off, we would have to qualify--
Team Captain Narren's words "We will do our best to make Victoria proud!" left a smile on my face as I made my way to the canteen to wait for them to come out half-an-hour late.
The half-hour passed quickly and I was confident that they would do well. Afterall, the team and I spend yesterday afternoon going over all the GCE PE syllabus that they covered so far. Our preparation was damn serious man! I give them powerpoint slides to revise, use Flash cards to quiz them. Donch pray pray arh!
Then Captain Narren comes to tell me, "Sir, all the anatomy, fitness and training sessions and hard core PE theory never come out!"
Uh Oh......
Nevermind, being a good sport we proceeded to the auditorium to watch the rest of the teams participate. Suddenly as we were seated, the ushers came to us and said,"Uh 'cuse me ar sir, you know your boys in the Top 20 for Individual Round? Got prize wan..... Oh ya, your team also in Top 4 for finals. Got to draw lots for table, can?"
WOOTS! Of couse can lah! As I always say...... Rock neber die!
So here are the highlights of our ardous climb to glory.
First came the Matrix Speed Round where teams had to choose questions from 12 boxes and give the correct answer:
The first question, on Judo, was answered by typical Victorian talent. Yup, pure, unadulterated guesswork.
Our second question, on Rugby, which the boys probably have never played during their PE lessons in VS was answered again with the belief in our natural Victorian talent. Yup, it was pure luck again. I look at the boys and could see them equally amazed. The audience must be wondering "Eh, liddat orso can ar?"
The we got the next question wrong, and I started to fear whether our first 2 lucky flukes would be the only thing we would take back with us.
But the next round would tell. We moved on to the Buzzer round where the first team to press the buzzer would get a chance to attempt the question. 2 point for correct answer, -1 point for wrong attempt.
But this round showed that we had what it takes to make history after all.
Against all odds, we led the round by a one point margin at the end of the round. Yup, thanks to Jeremy Tan's 'anyhowhantam also better than don't answer', we squeezed in the extra one point to make 11 points and qualify us to match Nanyang Girls in the final round.
In the final phase, students are split into pairs with a Describer and a Guesser. Describer has to describe elements of a sport to the Guesser without using certain forbidden words ala Taboo.
If ever there was a doubt that we would pull it off, this round erased all doubt from my mind that Victorians can indeed think outside the box.
Jeremy and Shaun got 3/5 for their round
Next was Naren and Ernest-
Although abit hesistant at first, the duo showed that they had almost telepathic communciation skills when they got 3/5 as well for this round!
Jeremy and Shaun made history for us after this round!
Despite giving a hilarious answer for the first question, they clinched the round by getting 3/5 again.
It was this consistency in scoring points for each round and earning the bonus points by naming the sports that allowed us to make sporting history.
It was a well-deserved win! All 4 boys won medals for being in the Top 20 Individual scorers amongst the Secondary School category
But winning the Championship was a sweet reward for our first batch of GCE PE students offering PE for O-Level. It has been a very challenging year for Sec 3B and some have expressed doubt about our level of ability, our committment and character.
But I believe that this is the first step towards proving that when it comes to PE, we are SERIOUS.
3 cheers for the team and Narren, you DID make VS proud!
Sec 3B Serious PE
is here to stay!

Combined Humanities Homework
Here's the homework from Mr Sham
Homework for Social Studies: Email to my foreign friend
From Jorge in Spain:
"Ola amigos! I heard a lot about Singapore’s peace, security and
economic progress. How did you manage to do this without the problems
so many other countries have, especially where so many different people
live together? Vamos!
Email me by 18th August Monday 2359hrs Singapore time (extended), with
the vote for the favorite identity as a footnote. Adios!
Jorge Sanchez"
I've also attached the handouts including the teacher's copy in case
some of you guys managed to somehow lost it (?!). For the video you can
watch it at this website
(http://www.evideo.edu.sg/programme.asp?id=730&subj=14&lvl=4)
Also, in order to address some of your concerns of difficulty in
understanding CONTENT, I would encourage you to watch the National Day
Rally on Sunday (after the ping pong final of course!), in whatever
language you prefer. This will help you A LOT for your contextual
knowledge in the managing diversity section. Use the reverse side to
put in the respective headings.
I will also upload to my own blog at society.edublogs.org later, so you
can check that out and other entries.
Enjoy your Olympics and may we all have fun learning.
Go Singapore!

GCE PE CourseWork (Soccer/Hockey- Week 8)
From the technical aspects of play, we are now developing the tactical aspects of play with the boys. From practicing set plays, now we see Mr Sng explaing the various principles of offensive and defensive play in action:
The Hockey boys were not to be outdone today.
Today, we saw Miss Sheikha giving them the finer points of how to take a penalty corner.
Of course, before all this practice can happen, we need to get geared up.
Here's Dilip, looking absolutely like a Sesame Street character :)
So on to the Penalty Corner! Usually it's the attackers who intimidate the defenders during the penalty corner. Here, it seems it's the other way around!
From the above clip, I suggest Khairul to take up Golf to represent Singapore in YOG.
We had the sides switch over. Must commend Dilip for his fearless ability to stop the ball using all parts of his body-- Only problem for him is once he falls down, he cannot stand up again on his own.

The boys doing hockey have gone on to work on their passing and dribbling in pairs
Here we see Mr Sng giving the boys some shooting practice.
Check out the fantastic curl in by Haaziq.
We saw some fantastic goal keeping as well-- JJ's ability to stop a ball with his face was awe-inspiring. Now the whole class want to take up wushu and learn to develop iron-hard muscles in the face.

Ochre Films "SportsSwap" Audition
The idea is to have athletes from different sports pair up and challenge each other at the other person's sports.
So since they were casting for camera friendly, handsome looking, articulate guys, who else but the dashing fellas from Sec 3B would step up to the challenge right?
I had a good giggle watching you fellas go through the audition. Usually, you yak non-stop in class- in front of the camera, you all 'kalang kabut'
Here we see Chong Chieh telling the whole world that Mr Siow teaches 'atanomy'
And then we have Desmond telling the camera that, he enjoys playing basketball and volleyball cos they are very similar---'both use hands'
You all ah!-- In class, can ask me all your 'technical' questions about how hormonal changes affect bone growth; in front of the camera, you all shy until liddat :)
Next time we get people auditioning us, I'm going to send Ali Thomas oredi.
Please tell him to stand by :)

B-Div Soccer Finals (VS vs SSS)
Match Video Uploaded!
View it here!
After over 30 years, Victoria School has finally made it back into the B-Div Soccer Finals.
It was a hard fought match with the team from Sports School. The last time VS B-Div Soccer team reached the finals was in 1973. In that year, our current B-Div Coach Mr Teo Yang Song, Captained the A-Div Soccer team to win 2-1 vs SJI. Our B-Div team played RI that year and lost. It has been a 35 year wait for us to get into the finals again since then.
Mr Teo's relentless effort was featured in an article carried by The New Paper
(click here for link to article)
But unfortunately, luck was not on our side and despite a hard fought match between both teams. Sports School won VS 4-0.
However, the strong fighting spirits of our boys made us all proud of them and allowed them to carry their heads high and hold thier well-earned 1st Runners-up medals with pride.
Meanwhile, after the boys have fought it out on the field, our teachers are hard at work battling it out on the soccer table!
I'm sure with this fighting spirit burning inside us, we will fight to make a stronger comeback next year!
Racial Harmony Day 2008
Today was Racial Harmony Day in Victoria School, the entire Sec 3B was colorfully togged out in various costumes to celebrate this occasaion.
The highlight of todays celebration was the Ethnic Pageant where teachers and students were brought on stage to show off their colorful costumes.
Here we see the students in their cultural best:
Not to be outdone, we see the teachers strutting their stuff on stage here!
All hail the king of the dance floor, Mr David Lee!

GCE PE CourseWork (Soccer/Hockey- Week 4)
Today is our 4th Week of Soccer/Hockey,
The boys are given more responsibility in their lessons are taking turns to lead their warm ups.
We begin each session with a brief introduction of the day's teaching points.
Our Hockey boys today will be working on defensive play by using concepts of channeling:
For our Soccer boys, they are focusing on shooting and volleying today:

GCE PE Coursework (Soccer/Hockey- Week 3)
Today, they are concentrating on the various ways to dribble past an opponent.
As the boys get more competent, an obstacle is placed to simulate a passive defender.
Here the boys use a green cone to take the place of an imaginary defender.
We don't see the boys taking Hockey today because most of the boys taking the Hockey module this semester are from the soccer team (and vice versa)
And today for the first time since 1973, the B-Boys have made it to the finals!
Tune in for more updates later on the match when we go to Jalan Besar Stadium

GCE PE CourseWork (Soccer/Hockey- Week 2)
In our Week 2 of CourseWork for GCE PE, the Hockey boys have had the priviledge of having Mr Suketu Khabaria from the Singapore Hockey Federation come down to give them a session on Hockey Rules and Umpiring
Mr Khabaria is an International Umpire for Hockey and gave our boys valuable insights into the game.
He was able to give them a detailed explanation of the various rules and regulations for players and referees. This will help them in their coursework to develop a better understanding of the game.
For the soccer boys, they were already on moving on to more advanced passing skills in their lessons.
Combined Humanities Homework
You need to submit your structured essay question (SEQ) assignment from the mid-year paper to me by the history lesson on Thursday. Failure to submit means you will be excluded from watching 'Nazis a Warning from History' and that you will have to work on the SEQ during the video.
Thanks and see you on Thursday.

GCE PE Course Work (Soccer/Hockey- Week 1)
They will have an option of either Soccer or Hockey.
The class will be split in 2 and lessons will be conducted simultaneously.
Here we see the boys in their first session for Hockey. Although most of them have played Hockey and Floorball in their time with VS, we still start from the basics to ensure that everyone will have a good grasp of the fundamentals.
In this clip, we see the second half of the class undergoing their soccer module.

Welcome back to school!
After a long break, it's back to school in Term 3.
Well, many of us went travelling during the June Holidays.
I went for a long awaited vacation with my wife to Japan.
After which, I did a 5-day training stint in Phillipines with my martial arts buddies there.
Some of our class boys went to Mecca for their Haj, while others went to Malaysia, Hong Kong for family holidays.
But I guess, none of our travels can compare to that by Matt who travelled to 42 countries in 14 months. Enjoy!

And any kind of papers are allowed in the container for papers. (newspaper, worksheets, draft papers etc.)
So guys, if you've any big containers or boxes, please bring them to school as we'll be setting up the class recycling area at the back of the class.
Thanks a lot for helping out your-very-responsible-environmentalist. :D

Everything your Mom would say to you- The Mom Song
What a mom says in 24 hours, condensed into 2 minutes and 55 seconds!
Lyrics for "The Mom Song" is given below. (Thank you BelleFlower15!)
"The Mom Song"
Get up now
Get up now
Get up out of bed
Wash your face
Brush your teeth
Comb your sleepyhead
Here's your clothes and your shoes
Hear the words I said
Get up now! Get up and make your bed
Are you hot? Are you cold?
Are you wearing that?
Where's your books and your lunch and your homework at?
Grab your coat and gloves and your scarf and hat
Don't forget! You gotta feed the cat
Eat your breakfast, the experts tell us it's the most important meal of all
Take your vitamins so you will grow up one day to be big and tall
Please remember the orthodontist will be seeing you at 3 today
Don't forget your piano lesson is this afternoon so you must play
Don't shovel
Chew slowly
But hurry
The bus is here
Be careful
Come back here
Did you wash behind your ears?
Play outside, don't play rough, will you just play fair?
Be polite, make a friend, don't forget to share
Work it out, wait your turn, never take a dare
Get along! Don't make me come down there
Clean your room, fold your clothes, put your stuff away
Make your bed, do it now, do we have all day?
Were you born in a barn? Would you like some hay?
Can you even hear a word I say?
Answer the phone! Get off the phone!
Don't sit so close, turn it down, no texting at the table
No more computer time tonight!
Your iPod's my iPod if you don't listen up
Where are you going and with whom and what time do you think you're coming home?
Saying thank you, please, excuse me makes you welcome everywhere you roam
You'll appreciate my wisdom someday when you're older and you're grown
Can't wait till you have a couple little children of your own
You'll thank me for the counsel I gave you so willingly
But right now I thank you not to roll your eyes at me
Close your mouth when you chew, would appreciate
Take a bite maybe two of the stuff you hate
Use your fork, do not burp or I'll set you straight
Eat the food I put upon your plate
Get an A, get the door, don't get smart with me
Get a grip, get in here, I'll count to three
Get a job, get a life, get a PHD
Get a dose of,
"I don't care who started it!
You're grounded until you're 36"
Get your story straight and tell the truth for once, for heaven's sake
And if all your friends jumped off a cliff would you jump, too?
If I've said it once, I've said at least a thousand times before
That you're too old to act this way
It must be your father's DNA
Look at me when I am talking
Stand up straighter when you walk
A place for everything and everything must be in place
Stop crying or I'll give you something real to cry about
Oh!
Brush your teeth, wash your face, put your PJs on
Get in bed, get a hug, say a prayer with mom
Don't forget, I love you
And tomorrow we will do this all again because a mom's work never ends
You don't need the reason why
Because, because, because, because
I said so, I said so, I said so, I said so
I'm the mom, the mom, the mom, the mom, the mom!!
Ta da!!! (less)

Sec 3 Camp @ KOREF 2008
When we arrived at KOREF, some of the more adventurous teachers were led by our Senior Camp Operator for a small tour round the place. Frank was a rare breed, he was part of the first batch of officers in the Singapore Armed Forces and his knowledge of nature and field crat
Here we are at beginning our tour of the various organic farm plots at KOREF:
Have you ever wondered how a dragon fruit is grown? Well, it's actually grown on a concrete post- see here:
We even got to see the ducks that were responsible for the 'organic' fertiliser used in farm:
You can find more about KOREF at Edu Outdoor's website by clicking here.
Having been on a number of overseas camps and trekked up a variety of mountains, I must say that the trek up Mount Lambak during this camp was one of the most challenging. Especially since I had to leave the camp late and had to catch up with everybody after they had already departed.
It was quite unnerving climbing up alone and then realising that the path in front forks into two! Luckily for me, our Victorians made their presence felt even in the huge mountain and from their cheers and songs, I could easily locate them.
Here we are with 3A crossing a suspension bridge at the final stage of the descent:
My Form Class, Sec 3B was also bonding strongly. The raft building session was hilarious with our never say die attititude, as we attempted time after time to launch the rafts and stay afloat on them.
There were many great moments of teamwork and bonding in the camp amongst the students. Unbeknownst to many of you, we teachers, also had our own specific team-building and problem solving sessions.
Problem: How to get coconut from coconut tree
The following video is not for the faint hearted.
It shows our HOD of PE Mr Maran in a most compromising position, aided and abetted by the man with the serious demeanour Mr Tan Chong Kiat and Mr Su Rong Hua, our fresh new-comer of the year.
Problem: Got coconut already, now how to get coconut water
Ever since I brought my military shovel to Mawaii for Veloci-T, I have been teased endlessly by Maran, Sng and gang.
Ah.... but without the shovel, we cannot get coconut water, you know.
and Sng, no the shovel does not bounce back when you chop the coconut with it.

Sec 3 Resilency Training
We began the program with an exciting program introducing the Dynamic Combat Method for Personal Protection. We are the first school to introduce Reality Based Martial Arts training as part of a Resiliency training module for students
Our boys were first made to go through some conditioning exercises to push their physical limits:
We can see all the 'fit-fit' VS boys really pushing themselves all the way!
After learning the basic ready stance and the fundamentals of 'shielding', our boys began to challenge each other in games to test their ability to maintain and protect their centre-line- Anyone who got touched by his opponent on the back or rear shoulder was 'out'
Our 3B sports class made good us of team-work and tag-team combinations to dominate this game:
The boys definitely enjoyed themselves and we hope that they will realise that being strong and tough isn't a merely physical attribute but a mental and emotional one as well. So pay attention during the resiliency training boys, you always learn something.

GCE PE Weight Training for Fitness (Week 7)
Today, they make us of the Swinger video motion capture and analysis software.
The Swinger software was originally designed to help golfers with their swing but it has grown to have multi-disciplinary uses across all sporting domains.
In this software, a video camera is hooked up to a laptop via firewire (1394)cable.
Video is then captured 'live' and stored either in the laptops hard-disk or RAM. Users are subsequently able to compare the capture footage via image overlay, image sync, etc.
Here we see the boys use the Deja-Vu feature where the boys are able to set the software to capture footage for a specified period and play it back after a short delay. This allows the performer to complete his action in front of the camera and then move over to the laptop to see an 'instant replay' of the previous 30secs of the clip.

Back to School after CNY
But truly the day began with a really upbeat start with the performers from Rhythm Masala who gave a rousing percussion and drumming performance for the Lower Sec.
The Upper Sec boys went back to class for their Character Education session. A follow-up from last week, today's CE's task was for the boys to solve the problem of getting a 'radioactive' waste container out of the radioactive zone without stepping into it or dropping the container.
Sec 3B guys definitely showed some creative sparks and insight with the way they utilised their ties to generate 'equal and opposing' forces to stabilise and move the radioactive container.
